Royal National Life Boat Institution

Royal National Life Boat Institution

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea – more than 140,000 since 1824. We provide an on-call 24 hour search and rescue service through our Lifeboats, Lifeguards and Flood Rescue teams. Our aim is to end preventable loss of life at sea and we do this through our rescue service and through our awareness and prevention service.

Keeping a modern fleet of lifeboats ever-ready to go to the rescue from 236 lifeboat stations is an expensive business. Add to that crew training, running a lifeguard service on more than 200 popular beaches and campaigning for water safety, and the pounds start to add up.

It costs around £385,000 a day to run the RNLI, all of which is generously donated by the public. This might sound like a lot, but we think the 22 people rescued a day (on average) are worth it.

Fill your Boots is a fun way for schools and youth groups to raise funds for the RNLI. We’re asking groups to fill a wellington boot with coins to help our charity save lives at sea. You can Fill your Boots however you like; and with our cool free downloads and themed activity ideas, you’re sure to have fun doing so.

Why get involved?

RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew save lives at sea every day around the coasts of the UK and Ireland. Their protective yellow welly boots help keep them safe at sea.

RNLI wellies keep crews’ feet warm and dry. They’re non-slip so the crews can move safely around the lifeboat in heavy seas, while reinforced toe-caps and soles protect the crews’ feet from crushing injuries.

They’re not common or garden wellies; that’s why they cost £42 a pair. £42 would be a great fundraising target for a small class or group. But if you’re at a bigger school, you could raise enough for two, three or even ten pairs! However much it takes to Fill your Boots, your contribution will be greatly appreciated.
