School Trips and Workshops “… involve me and I learn.”

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn” Chinese Proverb (Xun Kuang)

After four years of researching school trips and workshops for my children’s primary school I am aware first hand of how difficult and how much time it takes to find workshops locally. Not because they don’t exist, but because they are just so hard to find on the Internet.

Having a background in teaching myself, I decided to develop a new website to help save teachers’ time by encouraging local workshop providers to list their workshops in one place. Each workshop would be strongly linked to the National Curriculum and include all the information a teacher would need to make an informed choice.  And so the idea of was born – a one stop shop for teachers looking for local trips and workshops to enhance their students’ learning.

Eight months ago we began talking seriously about the idea, how we envisaged the website, what needed to be on it, what would be really useful to teachers … and so the seed was sown! Now we needed to find a graphic designer to help us develop a brand and an identity. Ian Ladley at Skinny Design proved to be just the man. He understood what we wanted and was more than happy to tweak and retweak his designs until we were happy! So, armed with our shiny new business cards we asked local workshop providers what they thought of the idea, what they wanted to see on the site and if they would be happy to promote their workshops with us.

Fast forward a few months and with the help of Aube Creations we have a brand new website that we are very proud of. There are almost 800 primary schools in North Yorkshire, Leeds, York and Bradford and our ultimate aim is to become a trusted partner of each one. The website is quite literally growing daily as new trip and workshop providers upload their trip and workshop details. “Become a Weather Reporter” with Reel Film, invite a real live Viking into school with Northern Forge, explore Harrogate’s Victorian Theatre or “Turn your Town into a Fabric Keepsake” with Needlepoint Cafe  – what fantastic ways to provide positive and memorable learning experiences for the young people in our area!

The site is free for teachers (or parents, Beaver leaders, Brownie leaders in fact anyone who works with primary aged children) to use. It also includes a calendar full of important dates and events, a charity page for schools looking for a local charity to support and links to free educational online resources.

If you are a trip or workshop provider based in North Yorkshire, Leeds, York and Bradford and would be interested in sharing your knowledge and expertise with primary aged children then please take a look at the site. We have a fantastic opening offer until the end of January 2014 – register and upload up to 8 workshops/trips for FREE for 6 months or pay £75 to upload them for a year. This is a massive 50% discount on the membership fee.

So why not take a look and upload your trips and workshops today? Please join us to make this a fantastic resource for teachers, to increase your business profile within the local community and to help enhance our children’s learning experience.
